Ford Moss is a raised peat bog on the Ford and Etal estate. Ford colliery to the north and west, with the old colliery chimney and engine house still standing, is a reminder of the industrial heritage of the area. The peat, over large areas of the Moss, is dominated by heather, cotton grass, hare’s tail and cross-leaved heath. There are locally occurring sphagnum carpets with sundew, cranberry and bog myrtle. Local wildlife includes red squirrels, roe deer, foxes, curlew, red grouse, woodcock, adders and common lizards.
