The Poplars is a farm of 325 hectares situated close to the busy market town of Market Rasen. It is a mainly arable holding, growing crops of cereals, oilseed rape, sugar beet and field beans. Some land has been turned back to grass fields, which will be grazed or cut for hay. The landscape is largely open, which has attracted farmland birds such as lapwing and grey partridge. Strips have also been sown with a mixture of pollen and nectar rich plants such as clover, to encourage insects and in turn the birds, which feed on them. Elsewhere on the farm extensive planting of new woodland has been undertaken, and these new woods will be linked with new hedge planting. New ponds and scrapes will add to the habitats available.
