The farm is a traditional small Derbyshire livestock farm, retaining much of the old field patterns, hedge boundaries and land use. It is located in a gently undulating landscape rising both sides of Mercaston Brook. In the 19th century roughly half the farm was in arable cropping, but for most of the 20th century dairying was the main activity. Since 1990 the main enterprises are beef and sheep. The farm is now in organic conversion and undertaking conservation work.
