Ouzel Meadows

The Ouzel Meadows lie in the floodplain of the Ouzel Valley. As a result these meadows flood regularly in autumn and winter. This seasonal flooding creates the ideal conditions for a wide variety of important plant, bird and bat species. The Ouzel Meadows have been managed by the Greensand Trust since 1999. Prior to this they had not been grazed for many years. This lack of management allowed coarse plant species and weeds to invade the grassland. Reintroducing cattle grazing and regular cutting of the coarse vegetation has encouraged the spread of meadow flowers and the wildlife that accompanies them.
