At our Cawood Farm, Stockbridge House, which is managed as a technology transfer facility, we have been hosting some 2000 primary school children per year since 2002. We have several different schemes
- Allotments visited 4 times a year by classes from 25/30 primary schools. The children grow and harvest a succession of crops from April till September.
- The Big Harvest where we grow crops both outside and under glass and children (often two classes) come to harvest them. We also do cooking in this scheme
- Our business scheme. Children plan a business selling bedding plants. They sow the seeds, we grow them on, they collect and sell at their school. They need to do all finances and work out marketing and sales. Basically a small company experience.
Discovering Our Countryside
A partnership between STC Research Foundation and Mark Thompson of Video Edge. Discovering Our Countryside provides resources for teachers in the form of seasonal videos and VLE lessons to help engage children in where food comes from and the environment around them.
Key stage 1 & 2 – resources cover English, Maths, Science and so much more
Key stage 3 & 4 – resources are linked to STEM subjects. Currently being developed are specific resources for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition.
For school teachers and/or pupils in the East Yorkshire area visits to arable/livestock farms can be arranged to create a full package of learning and further enhance the experience.
In addition to Discovering Our Countryside, STC Research Foundation support several other educational activities.
