Chawton has a long association with Jane Austen. She lived in Chawton between 1809 and 1817 and wrote a number of works here including 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Persuasion'. Chawton House Library sits within an early 19th century designed landscape that is being restored as part of an Environmental Stewardship Agreement. The historic parkland is managed by sheep and horse grazing, and a small amount of hay making. Woodlands and parkland trees are managed to preserve and, where necessary restore landscape quality, and conserve biodiversity.
